Sutil leads second Italian practice
Formula One news: Sutil leads second Italian practice - GPUpdate.net Formula One
Force India returned to the top of the timesheets as Adrian Sutil finished quickest in Friday afternoon practice at Monza. The German was ahead of the Renault pairing of Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso although championship leader Jenson Button languished in nineteenth spot, just ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella's Ferrari.
Although spells of heavy rain are expected as the weekend begins, Monza crowds continued to enjoy the sunshine as morning turned to afternoon on Friday. Air temperatures reached 27°C (81°F) although the track was up to 38°C (100°F) for the second hour and a half practice period of the day.
Following on from a superb pole position in Belgium a fortnight ago, the typical irony of the 2009 season continued as Giancarlo Fisichella - now at Ferrari - finished the session 20th and last as former team-mate Sutil took the top spot with a best effort of 1:23.924.
Behind the Force India-Mercedes, Renault saw both of its cars reach the top three as Romain Grosjean led Fernando Alonso in R29s now equipped with KERS. Just missing out on a top three time was Heikki Kovalainen, who was the leading McLaren in fourth, ahead of Robert Kubica's BMW.
Spa winner Kimi Räikkönen was the top Ferrari in eighth place on the Scuderia's home weekend as World Champion Lewis Hamilton, the driver who dominated the morning session, finished ten places further back and just missed out on a top ten opening.
Championship contenders Brawn GP and Red Bull Racing all feature in the last seven cars in what is a bizarre season; Mark Webber leads the way for the Milton Keynes outfit with 14th place, four positions ahead of team-mate and 2008 Italian Grand Prix victory Sebastian Vettel. The before mentioned Button was 1.5 seconds off the leading pace in 19th as Rubens Barrichello finished 16th.
Despite several drivers missing chicanes, it was once again a relatively incident-free session with the minor exception of Williams' Kazuki Nakajima; the Japanese driver ran wide to kick up the dust on the exit of the Parabolica but recovered well to avoid his off-track excursion becoming a trip into the tyre wall.
