Think about the fans, Valencia tells FIA
Formula One news: Think about the fans, Valencia tells FIA - GPUpdate.net Formula One
Organisers of the European Grand Prix have advised Formula One governing body the FIA to think again over the decision which sees the Renault team banned from the race in just under four weeks' time. The French team, which has appealed the suspension, was handed the punishment after Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
With the right-front wheel flying off Fernando Alonso's car at the Hungaroring, the FIA claims that the team was aware of the loose wheel nut which caused the incident and therefore caused an unnecessary and dangerous situation. With local hero Fernando Alonso now looking to miss the Grand Prix in Valencia next time out, race promoters have seriously questioned the FIA's decision from the eyes of race fans.
"We must think about the fans and, as everyone knows, many of them bought tickets to see Fernando Alonso drive in Valencia," Jorge Martíez 'Aspar', of Valmor Sports - the company behind the event - told Spanish news agency EFE. "We understand that they must not be harmed by this decision.
"We will be attentive to the opinion that is on appeal and we have been in contact with the Spanish Automobile Federation, with the Renault team with Fernando Alonso - we would like him to be on the grid at the Grand Prix of Valencia. It is a pity that he is currently not in the race but we are confident that he can run although we know it will be difficult, especially after other incidents that occurred at the weekend."
With Renault having since paid the €6,000 deposit required to appeal a stewards decision, a hearing will be taking place within the next four week. "What has happened is serious but hopefully that will not harm either the Grand Prix of Europe nor the fans," Aspar added.
