Comparing this to the IRL/Champ split is obviously what first comes to mind, however you truly can't compare the two. The IRL/Champ split divided engine providers, putting the already few manufacturers for the series on different sides. With the FIA/FOTA split (assuming it goes through) ALL of the manufacturers are agreeing on the new series, so with all of them supporting this change, where the manufacturers are is where the series will be.
Personally, I think this will be a good thing, whether it helps to change the rules of F1 or with a new series. The only problem is the formation of a governing body for the series. For example with the drama last season, the FOTA as a group wouldn't be the best to resolve those conflicts, they would need something else for those decisions IMO.

You know who is laughing right now: RON DENNIS.
Bernie and Mosley really thought they stuck it to Ron over the lie-gate fiasco.
How much do you want to bet that Ron is backing this breakaway series idea with his will and his wallet.
Man, they messed with the wrong dude when they went after Dennis.
Now that he and Monte are together Bernie and Max will either have to back down or see it through.
They have never backed down before....
War makes strange bedfellows indeed.

I hope the new Series will hold on to the promises they`ve made!
I also hope that they will make the sport more fan-friendly....just like the DTM,which is in fact something people can attend with their family without being broke afterwards

I still can't believe this is happening, I'm truly shocked!
While this may be good for the sport in the long run I'm still kinda bummed because the coming 2-3 years probably wont be as satisfying for us fans as the past years have been. I think it will take some years before the sport is really back on its feet.

I am pretty happy with this decision. At first I was nervous because I thought it was going to end up being just Ferrari leaving, but now with everyone else coming I think we can return to the F1 of the past in terms of tech. I strongly opposed the budget cap.
I would feel sorry for USF1, but a US team founded and run by a British guy is somewhat antithetical imo.
