But after the 24hr Nurburgring last week, the new R8 LMS certainly proved itself ready to go against the best that Porsche can make.
Pretty sure that the R8 doesn't meet ACO regs either. It was originally designed for FIA GT3 racing not for the ACO's LMGT2 category.

Exactly. The R8 is built for FIA GT3. Now, if ALMS was smart, they'd go after Grand Am's GT, or Speed World Challenge and make that their GT3, instead of these gentleman drivers in 997 Cup Cars.
