Cost cutting could lead to a full grid

Potential new teams keen to be budget-limited next year are seemingly clamouring at F1's paddock turnstile.

USF1/USGPE has already lodged an application for 2010, Lola is evaluating a start-up team, and London's Times newspaper said David Richards wants to bring his Aston-Martin brand onto the grid.

Up to five other small teams may also have expressed interest in the controversial new era of low budget limits, with Bernie Ecclestone also said to be offering teams a financial package with an eye on boosting the grid to 26 cars.

The British independent engine firm Cosworth would also be involved with an affordable customer package, as the threat of more carmakers following Honda out of the sport rises.

"This is a great time to come in," Richards, set to enter talks with Middle Eastern backers about his plans for a team with a staff of 140, confirmed.

"Nothing is decided yet," he continued, "but the key to all of this is the financial reality that the budget cap will bring."

Formula One news: Richards interested to join F1 next season - GPUpdate.net Formula One

Former BAR team boss David Richards has said he is very seriously considering to enter Formula 1 next season as Formula 1 will introduce a budget cap of 30 million pounds. Richards planned to enter F1 back in 2008 but was not allowed to enter the sport with a customer chassis.

"We are very serious about entering Formula One in 2010 providing that it is commercially viable and there is the potential to be fully competitive," Richards said. "On the commercial side we would want a situation where the sort of budget you would need to be competitive would be sensible and we would expect to see a reasonable return on our investment in the longer term.

"We would also want the rules to be such that they provide the potential for us to be fully competitive. We would not want to be in Formula One just to make up the numbers. Assuming that the new rules are commercially viable and there is the potential to be fully competitive, then we are ready to press the go button."

That would be awesome to see another 2 or 3 teams join the grid! As if things aren't exciting enough now, just add another 6 cars to the fray! I'd love to see USF1 and Lola compete, and having an Aston Martin team would be rad too.

Nothing could be better for F1 than 20+ cars on the grid.

Its about time! The sport can lead in innovation without blowing billions per season. I'd also be interested to see the other drivers that would come into the sport with these new teams.

F1 this season just gets better and better, as does the Pit Stop!! This is a wealth of unbiased, objective information. There are other forums out there I've see, but they are more focused on a particular team or manu and you don't get the same level of intelligence and perspective. This post here by Hamad is great. It would be fantastic to see 3 more teams out there, especially a U.S.-based team. Hopefully USF1 will be a shot in the arm for us to get a GP back in North Am.
