Most people retrofit these types of cars with some type of Cosworth V-8 engine. They are still expensive to operate, but much easier and more reliable than a modern F1 motor. The 3.5 litre Cosworths (the DFV I believe) is good for 575 HP on race fuel. That is much more than just about anyone but a highly skilled race driver can handle.
