NASCAR: Gordon Ready To Accept Pay Cut

The economy is reaking havoc in the motorsport world!

Gordon ready to accept pay cut

By Steven English Wednesday, December 10th 2008, 13:50 GMT

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon says he would take a pay cut to help his Hendrick Motorsport survive the current financial crisis.

Several NASCAR teams have been forced to make significant staff cuts, but Gordon has volunteered to sacrifice some of his own salary if it would stop Hendrick from having to make cuts of their own.

"It's tough times, it's something to be very serious about," said Gordon.

"I'll do whatever it takes for us to have the best team we can possibly have. If that means take part of my salary to keep certain people on, or to hire certain people, I'll do it.

"If me and Rick (Hendrick) sit down and talk about the position that we're in - obviously I'm not the only one - but I would be open to it. I never got into this to make millions of dollars."

Gordon says it's 'ridiculous' how much money some drivers have been able to make in recent years and believes they should be the first to cut back in hard times.

"I never dreamed in a million years I was going to make this kind of money," he said. "This is ridiculous, it's stupid what we spend on motorhomes and planes and all this.

"Do we need that? No. But things have been good for us, the sport's been good. I'm living this way because things have been very good. Now, obviously, we're having to cut back, and I have to cut back, too."

That's a very noble move on Gordon's part.

Now, if only F1 drivers could take a hint like this guy...
