Rick Kelly wins final race at Oran Park

By David Wright Sunday, December 7th 2008, 07:11 GMT

HSV Dealer Team's Rick Kelly won the third and final race of the NRMA Motoring & Services Grand Finale at Oran Park this afternoon.

In the final V8 Supercar race to be held at the circuit before it becomes a housing estate, Kelly led from start to finish apart from a period during the compulsory pitstops in what is expected to be his last race for the HSV team.

Garth Tander spent most of the race close behind him but never in a position to overtake and finished second. The outgoing champion took the round win however, ahead of Craig Lowndes and Kelly.

Lowndes finished the race third for Team Vodafone, and looked like challenging Tander for second at one point before fading in the closing stages and nearly falling into the clutches of James Courtney in fourth, who had Shane van Gisbergen and Lee Holdsworth right behind him.

Jason Bright, Fabian Coulthard and Paul Morris finished closely bunched together in seventh through to ninth.

What had been a disappointing weekend for Mark Skaife turned around somewhat in the final race of the weekend, climbing from 26th on the grid to finish the race less than a second out of the top ten in twelfth position, despite flat-spotting a left front tyre in the middle of the race.

Steven Richards made a great start to the race, jumping from third to the lead by turn one. However it was all downhill from there, running wide later on lap one to fall to third, and then being given a ten-second penalty for jumping the start, eventually finishing 17th, one place ahead of teammate Mark Winterbottom whose championship challenge never materialised.

Talking of the championship, Jamie Whincup had a similar race to Steven Richards. Starting 28th, he was 21st by the end of lap one (helped by spins in the mid-pack for Todd Kelly and Paul Dumbrell). By lap 4 he was 16th, just behind Paul Morris.

Coming over the bridge on lap 5, Whincup made an aggressive passing move on the inside of Morris. In the middle of the corner, Morris appeared to turn in on Whincup, sending Whincup off into the grass while Morris continued on unscathed.

A flat tyre cost Whincup time and forced him to pit, putting him a lap down, a position he was unable to recover from, not helping himself by going off again later in the race, finishing 23rd.

In the end Whincup finished the championship 254 points ahead of Mark Winterbottom, with Garth Tander just failing to catch Winterbottom for second place in the title, finishing just 31 points behind him.
