Alonso on top with Renault in second practice
The dull and overcast conditions at Spa Francorchamps greeted the 20 racers at the start of the second 90-minute free practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend but a rain shower after 30 minutes made it a differing programme this afternoon in tricky conditions that saw Alonso spring a surprise with Renault.
Lewis Hamilton set the pace ahead of the rains with a best lap of 1:48.805, some way of Felipe Massa’s morning best of 1:47.284s. Everyone got down to the tyre programme right at the start of the session well aware of inclement weather on the way, but within minutes the first drops of rain began to fall resulting in less than ideal conditions.
Following a pause in the action as the rain shower passed overhead, the teams were back out with Spa Francorchamps specialist Kimi Raikkonen becoming the first victim of the slippery conditions as he backed his Ferrari hard into the tyre wall at tune nine. Raikkonen lost his rear wing in the impact and slowly made his way back to the pits.
After striking the retaining tyre wall, water that was being held in the tyres leaked onto the circuit and it was the unfortunate Giancarlo Fisichella who lost control as the small river of water made its way onto the racing line. Fisichella’s Force Indian Ferrari made heavy contact with the barriers damaging both ends of the car before coming to a rest.
With Fisichella’s stricken car at the side of the circuit and a small river forming from the base of the tyre wall, the Race Director opted to call out the red flags and stop the session.
The final 20 minutes saw another flurry of activity with some improving and some finding and surpassing the limit. Fernando Alonso moved fastest in the final minutes using the harder Bridgestone compound on his Renault. The former champion recorded a best lap of 1:48.454s to top the afternoon session by five-hundredths of a second from Massa.
The Ferrari driver will not however be unduly concerned having comprehensively set the pace in the morning session but team-mate Kimi Raikkonen heads into Saturday practice having posted the fifth fastest time prior to damaging his F2008 and losing a good deal of track time.
Heikki Kovalainen was another driver to make a late session gain as he moved third fastest in his McLaren Mercedes ahead of early pace-setter and championship leader Lewis Hamilton who was unable to improve in the final minutes of the session.
