I have spent about an hour now going through dcresource.com's sample gallery for compact cameras and the only conclusion I can make is that they all more or less suck.

If I want a GREAT camera that isn't a massive project just to carry around, which one do I want? Perhaps I should just get a DSLR and stfu? But I want something that takes brilliant photos in auto mode - I am not particularly interested in fiddling with ISO modes and what have you every time I whip it out. And I don't want to carry camera bags while skiing ... which will ultimately result in me not even bringing the camera, which means no photos at all rather than terrible ones.

Have gone through a ton of 4-500 dollar compacts over the years and they have all been terrible. So budget is somewhere between 501- and nine hundred million euros.

Brother, I have a Nikon D7000 and almost never take it out of AUTO mode.

Almost all of the photos I took at the Canadian Grand Prix this year were shot in AUTO. They came out better than previous years when I toiled over every setting.

The nice thing about having the DSLR is that you have the additional functionality available to you if you ever want it.

The most critical thing is glass - get a camera body that can accept the very best lenses. I like Nikon but there are many options.

Here are some example shots from the CGP I took - all in complete AUTO mode.















These photos are not perfect - if I had tinkered manually with the settings I could have used a slower shutter speed and given the cars a sense of speed.

But the AUTO mode did a more than adequate job for me.

 

Canon S95.

I have the S90, an older version. Of course, the 95 will be obsolete in 6 mos. but it will take a good photo.

 

^ I had an S90. It is a great point and shoot.

But once you outgrow it, you will have to buy another camera.

Buy for the future and avoid buying twice.

There is no substitute for a Leica. Canon and Nikon are second class. This compact digital is the best. hands down.

 

^ Ha Ha! He said he wanted AUTO mode. Not, it takes a freaking rocket scientist to focus this damn camera mode.

Just kidding. Leica is great.

 

What didn't you like about other camera's you've owned?

Most camera's are fine in good light conditions...when you start bumping up the ISO, the differences become more apparent.

In all seriousness, I have read that the Leica V-Lux 30 has a lot of noise in the photos.

Have you found this to be the case JCay?
