Thanks to all of you for valuable feedback. Please keep posting your experiences. I have had a few pro photographer friends advice me on which one of these camera's to buy. I am not looking to becoming a PRO at all! I do not have the time. Just need to take quality pics as I am sick of changing point and shoot camera's.

I went through this when I bought my DSLR. Called all the pros, called others who had them, researched online which was better and it's all worthless. Whether you go with canon or nikon your in a good boat. I went canon and haven't looked backed, while a good friend bought a nikon and loves it as well. My advice that will really make the choice for you is to go to the store and hold each one, take pictures, change settings, change lenses and see which of the two feels more comfortable to you.

I am getting a D3100. Within the week. It has the best mix of what i need and for 750 cdn I can get it with a 55-200 lens. I don't know enough about your needs to tell what you should get but I would get something cheap... the big ones with all the toys seem to be too much for most people.

Great Links! That helped. DPreview is a really good site and I read reviews of both the camera's there. Thanks GrayTT

Hey man, just thought I would give you a little update. I ended up finding a distress sale of a D3100 last night and picked one up with all accessories and a few extra memory cards and stuff for $400 bucks cdn. So far I have been just shooting around my property but already feel over my head in options etc. I love the feel of it when i am shooting and cannot wait to learn the camera inside and out! I will let you know how it goes.

That's great! Congrats on the purchase. I'm going to be going with the Canon T3i as per the majority of recommendations.
