Retard noob needs help

OK, so I got my D90, and managed to figure out how to attach the lense, the UV filter thingy, and even the lens hood.

Trouble is the lens doesn't have any manual, and the lens hood has markings like HB-46 which I have no idea what it means or if it needs to be attached in any particular way.

And yes, I got the D90 because apparently we didn't get the memo that little kids are too fast for little P&S cameras.

And thanks again for all of you who helped in the buying process.

The lens hood?

Oh geez, we may have overestimated the Force with this one.

I don't think you can put it on wrong, it just goes on top of your head, and then you do the chicken dance.

Do you even need it? I just saw those numbers and wondered if it's some kind of photog code for noob trap.

When things calm down we do plan on taking some actual classes, which should be fun.

You don't *need* a lens hood but you pretty much just screw it on the front of the lens. If you screw it on and it's not wobbly, you should be good to go.

Any other problems?

Happy shooting!

The initial focus seems slow under any mode.

It says to press down half way, then the lens whirl a bit, then it shoots. Seems like it should be a bit faster, like how else are you going to shoot sports shots?

The other problem is that the viewfinder knob. It doesn't seem to make much difference in focus. Is there an object that can help make the focus effort more dramatic and therefore easier to tell if I a mdoing it right?
