Plus'd on the 50mm on a crop body!

I actually have the 50mm f1.8 el cheapo from Canon, it's great for me (indoor sports) but it just zooms too much for random portraits, I have to be too far back to be really practical. As suggested something in the 35mm range would be much better suited.

And I'd still get the kit lens because having just a prime lens is rather limiting, and the kit lens will work just fine outdoors or in good lighting situations. It's great to have as an all-around daily driver, if you will.

Keep in mind you can also rent lenses. If you're undecided, go rent one for the weekend it costs next to nothing (15-50$ around here, most being 20$) and you'll know if it's practical for you or not.

Good choice on the 35mm. I purchased mine from a local shop 2 weeks ago and am loving the performance of this lens. It's a must have for any DX body.
