But if you want to go halg way between "point and shot" and DSLR then check out the G10 from Canon, amazing camera and a great size that can fit anywhere.
I have a Canan 5D MarkII and will be getting a G10 soon as my 2nd cam
Price is not the issue for the D90.

The important question is, how good is the D90 for auto action shots? I do plan on learning the DSLR, but will someone who isn't a photo buff, like my wife, who understands the benefits of lense and shutter speed, be able to shoot better pictures with it in auto mode than the SONY sybershot dummy camera that we have been using?

Short answer : yes.
Especially if you use a high aperture quality lens.

There is no comparison possible between an SLR and a P&S or even a bridge. I had a Sony R1 for a while, biggest consumer non-SLR you can get ... it sucked for action shots, and I LOVED the upgrade to a Canon 40D ... I couldn't believe how much better it was.

From an entry level perspective I think the Canon XTi is a great camera. It is inexpensive, easy to use, quick to master and will handle all your daily needs. Also there are tons of lens options, grips, etc if you decided you want a bit more. To be honest I have one and a friend has the "monster" 50 and for someone that uses their camera for everyday the XTi Rebel is the way to go. Just my .02

BTW I picked mine up for less than $400 with a grip two batteries, and a nice case so they can be had at a great price.

Hope it helps.

Cute kid.

The last in the Rebel line-up, the T1i has HD video as well, something to consider.

Indeed a bigger SLR could be too cumbersome for daily family shooting. I know my 40D is kinda hefty ... not something I bring along all the time. The Rebel is much smaller.

This being said, although I have a Canon I think Nikon bodies are better in terms of sharpness and color. I think the entry level Nikon (whatever it's called) has video recording too, which could be handy for your application.

Get an SLR, a reasonably wide prime lens (24-35mm) with high aperture (f1.8 and lower) and you will just laugh at the quality of the pics you can pull off with zero practice (or skills, in my case). Save on the body, splurge on lenses.
What do you guys think about this package?

I hear ya, I love my 5DMarkII
But the G10 is way ahead of the G9… check it out when you get a chance. I was very impressed

What's a good 1.8 lense that you like?

I can just get the body...
