FWIW, that little shorty barrel isn't worth shit when you have distances like that to cover. I'd have at least 16", if not 20" for that place. Better yet, M14 or SR25 or 417.

Probably an EOD dog - smells bomb chemicals... The other possibility is a drug dog since it appears they're in Afghanistan. My guess is Navy EOD guy based on the uniform, shorty M4, and the dog.
Still waiting on the helmet thing - I recently found out, so I'm curious to see if anyone else out there knows. It's pretty interesting and very clever.

It's a spare battery for their radios (either MBITR or a Harris 52). The guy I saw doing it had it in a spare grenade pouch and used it to balance his NODs...
Pretty cool.
