New camera?

what Camera should I get for the wife. I know absolutly nothing about cameras, I have the cannon powershot sd750 I believe. She wants a more advanced camera that as she says takes nice pics. price range is $1500-$2000.

What does she have now? What does she photograph?

I'm thinking prosumer SLR, Canon 40D or 50D, or the Nikon equivalent. Depending on how demanding she is (and/or knows exactly what she wants), an entry level SLR could work wonders as well (thikn Rebel XSi)Add a good lens (which will be determined by what type of photos she shoots), and you're set. I wouldn't bother with Canon's kit lens (no idea about Nikon).

I've heard very good things about the Nikon 18-200, a great all-around lens. Wide enough and lots of zoom.
However I know nothing on Nikon bodies. Hopefully someone can chime in on that.

About a year ago our family picked up a Nikon D80 and it's great for football games and other sports but also puts out great up close pictures at parties. I'm pretty sure the D40 comes with the same lens and just a few less features but you may want to look into either one of those if you aren't looking for a more professional camera

Either do the SLR route ( cons been learning curve [you have to be willing to put effort in ] ) or get a top of the line P&S which will take excellent photos.
