Here's the other side of photography.
A friend essentially gave me his Canon 10D, with the dreaded err99, he probably took a million shots, so it's only fair.
With Canon wanting 50$ and 6 weeks (!) to tell me what was wrong with it, I had to have at it.
I'm assuming the shutter is worn/broken, but at this stage I can't see anything visually wrong.
Unsuspecting 10D at rest.

Removing the back cover.

Front cover gone as well ... not very useful.

These little shims are broken as you can see. When intact, they are what gives you the "click" feeling when depressing the shutter button. There are 2 of them, for that half-click feel. As it is, the shutter just goes down and clicks. Eh.

Workspace getting cluttered. Screen has been removed, as well as some chip ... not sure of its purpose.

Yeah, them be small screws.

The cmos sensor and ... err ... the brain of the camera in the metal box? not sure.

The camera as it stands now. What you see is the shutter mechanism. Didn't take it apart because I need to de-solder it from the board on the other side. And that's scary, everything so far was just connectors.

I can hear something loose in the shutter somewhere, but I can't see anything wrong with it at this stage. I'll get my hands on a fine soldering iron and take this puppy apart a bit more. Either way, I ordered a new shutter mechanism, will order new shutter button shims, and hopefully this 10D will be a perfect beater.
I'm also enjoying the design inside very much. I find myself thinking "mmmh, could anyone make that frame out of titanium or carbon fiber? That'd be sick ... LOL
Anyways ... the joys of a sunday afternoon for a photo geek.

I wouldn't take apart anything let alone a camera like that!

I know I would loose like half of those tiny midget screws in 5 minutes.

This is actually the second time I'm taking it apart. First time around was just a visual quick inspection (secretly hoping the noise I was hearing was just a loose tidbit)
Unfortunately it appears the new shutter will be delayed for at least 10 days ... so I think I'll put it back together tonight. Everything is sorted and stored properly, but I'm not sure I'll remember all the little details in 2 weeks time!
It's surprisingly easy once you get past the "oooooh $hit what am I doing?" stage. As long as you keep in mind that no force should ever be required to remove parts, it's cool. They all stack up rather nicely.
