You are looking at what I like to call a mistake. It is a close up of a Silicon crystal. I call it a mistake because it normally is a silvery color but I had the flash on and it reflected all the light to make it look black. Here is a few more I just snapped.

dang.... the sillicon crystal looks very neat.... any details about it?

Well I dunno how much detail you want but this is a left over chunk from a wafer fab company. The silicon is melted kind of in a tank then large single crystals are formed (if you want details about this I could explain more). Sometimes the furnace needs to be shut down and whatever is in the tank crystallizes. You can break it up into chucks if you want a piece or just remelt it. Mine was broken up and is actually polycrystalline as you can see the many different structures present. The large single crystals are then taken and refined by zone refining to ultra pure standards. Once you have a single crystal of ultra pure silicon you can slice it into wafers and proceed to make your computer chips. If you want any more details let me know. Next week I will take some pictures of my mineral collection so stay tuned.

I took this pic tonight. Quick shot (no light box, just car on a white sheet) of my latest ... 1:12 Murcielago 40th Anniversary by AutoArt. The thing is massive and absolutely incredible. The detail, the weight, the paint ... everything is wow.
Oh, and true to the original, I can't seem to replicate the verde artemis colour. Straight off the cam, it was almost monterey blue, when it's more of a dark green in real life.
