WOW! That's way closer than I ever want to be. Here's one I took the other night. We rarely get lightning so this was my first attempt, from my backyard.

Use a tripod, bulb setting, iso 100, f stop 6.3, remote release, manual focus set at infinity. Aim the camera at an area that's active, press and hold the release until the lightning flashes.
Here's a couple more:




I can't wait till the next electrical storm. My focus was a bit off on these and the lightning was too far away. (Not that I want it close like the one you posted).

Out of curiosity ... why f6.3 rather than f8, which should yield a nearly endless DoF?

The first few shots I tried with a higher f stop but the lightning was so far away they were poorly exposed. I probably should have left it at f8 or f11 as the storm got closer but I didn't. I just wish we had more electrical storms around here. I need to experiment more.
