Guys mostly just want to know that the power and performance is there, they never really need it, so unless you want to be able to brag that you have x-more horsepower than your neighbor, I would get the S5.
It doesn't matter if you're racing or not, performance = excitement.

And also is it just me or has the OP already had an s4? You've already gotten used to the audi feel, the s5 won't excite you that much.

Did you test-drive them already? Which one did you choose?

I love Audi's but all the time I drive a BMW I just forget about the rest... the only one that I would own without any questions is the R8.

Personally, RS5 > M3 > S5 (and I've driven all three). The RS5 is coming to the US in the fall if you can wait that long (most dealers will extend leases if you need to).

geoff2010 is an unknown quantity at this point
I owned an e92 M3 for 3 years and now have a 2011 S5. The M3 was much more of a drivers car. So much fun to toss around in the mountains or at the track. The S5 is more of a looker (IMO) and has more creature comforts. The S5 feels "fat" and "sluggish" on the track/mountains. I even put some after market springs to stiffen it up, still not doing it for me.

I am replacing it with an R8, should solve all my Audi gripes

Not that I've heard. When I talked to the marketing guy about it, he suggested about $80K base, $90K loaded (ceramic brakes, etc.).
