A quattro with snow tires driving in the snow, nothing new. Maybe that times writer should have watched this before making it seem like it is the best thing since sliced bread and canned beer.

It is essentially the same technology. The only difference between the two is ground clearance.

I love my quattro and its nice to see an R8 out in the snow. But yeah, all the blizzard comments and acting like it was such a big deal. 
2 feet of snow in the driveway and nicely plowed roads, thats an average winter day up here. AWD is a nice to have, but it kinda doesn't matter. Just about anything can get by after the plows do their job. Here is my old winter beater.
