Well, design and pose (??) are all very subjective. Performance numbers allow us to look at the R8 and the 997TT objectively - and they are not even in the same class.

The 997TT has 60 more hp, and 80 more foot pounds of tq. That translates into a real world difference of nearly 1 second 0-60 mph - 997TT reaches 60 mph in 3.6 second while the R8 clocks in at 4.2 seconds. And I have to challenge you on the handling of the two cars. I think the 997TT handles as well as any car on the road - the R8 included. When I test drove the R8 it felt like the gas pedal wasn't going all the way to the floor. It just ran out of guts way too early. Also, it felt pretty much identical to the 997TT in the turns. I agree that it looks great - maybe better than the 997TT - but so does the Aston and the Maseratti. I see the Vantage and the Gran Turismo as the R8's real peers.

I think that the title of this thread says it best - if judged just by their "pictures" then the R8 may win the day. But if you look under the surface, the 997TT is simply a more complete car. The 997TT legitimately gives you both great looks and real supercar power. Too many cars match and surpass the R8 in terms of performance in its price range. Would I take one - HELL YEAH! But if I was really after performance, it wouldn't be at the top of my list.

Dana - Nice points... FWIW, I couldn't bring myself to buy a "supercar" that shares the same engine as my lil ol' sedan for twice the money.

You make very good points but if you read what i said, i never mentioned that the R8 was even in the same category. I said it can't be compared since it can't even remotely compete in terms of power and acceleration. I strongly believe that the R8 would be complete with a V10, but the point i was trying to make is that the V8 isn't so bad when considered as an alternative to a C4S or a granturismo for example.

Technically speaking, both engines aren't entirely identical. The R8 has twin throttle bodies vs 1 for the RS4, different exhaust systems, different intake system, different ECU calibration and dry sump for the R8. The R8 makes slightly more power although they are both quoted having the same power.
