That's good that you are doing it right. I don't know what year your R1 is, but with my 2007 it had a really bad problem in second gear at 5500rpm, it would bog for a couple seconds, it's a known problem with the 2007 model but I never got around to getting the ECU replaced. I had quite the fight with the service department at our local Yamaha stealership, they were completely lying to me about the tech recall, good thing I had done my homework first.
