BMW i8 - Model Highlights - BMW North America
A plug-in hybrid that sparks revolution in every ignition. The BMW i8 is no ordinary sports car. It's an icon of progress — an extraordinary evolution of The Ultimate Driving Machine.ฎ As a all-wheel drive plug — in hybrid sports car, this revolutionary vehicle combines the power of a 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine and the efficiency of an all-electric motor for an exhilarating 357-hp and 420 lb-ft of torque driving experience that's every bit BMW.

16,6 $/100mi Cost...................................10,4 $/100mi Cost

1-2% storage loss of Hydrogen every day, because atomic numbers 1, hydrogen (periodic table), cannot be stored without losses.
Therefore it isn't recommended to park in a small garage and switch a few days later the lights on.

To produce 1 kilogram of hydrogen from electrolysis of distilled water (70 percent efficient process) it's need 56 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
For 5 kilogram tank of hydrogen (Toyota Mirai) it's need to use 280 kilowatt-hours of electricity. 280 kilowatt-hours into the Tesla Model S - it's able to travel 800 miles.

Total CO2 emissions Electric vs Diesel

United States electricity generation efficiency: 508 gCO2/kWh
United States power plant energy mix efficiency: 49% (coal, gas, petroleum products, nuclear power, regenerative energies)
Transmission lines efficiency: -6%
Low voltage transformation substation efficiency: -4%
Total efficency=0,49*0,94*0,96=0,442 ---> 44,2% efficency at the power outlet

Electric vehicle 80% efficency from power outlet to electric motor (high-voltage battery, power electronics unit, voltage converter, ...)
Electric vehicle total efficiency=0,8*0,442=0,354 ---> 35%

Power consumption achieved by EV drivers: 37 kWh/100mi
Total EV CO2 emissions in California: 37 kWh/100mi * 100/35 * 508 gCO2/kWh = 53.700 gCO2/100mi (California)
Total EV CO2 emissions in cold Montana: 42 kWh/100mi * 100/35 * 508 gCO2/kWh = 60.960 gCO2/100mi (Montana + heating)

Haulage and refining of Gasoline and Diesel Well-To-Tank --> 38 gCO2/mile ---> 3.800 gCO2/100mi

Mercedes E350 BlueTec
Fuel consumption of 32 mpg, 0,117 l/mile, 0,031 gal/mile ---> 259 gCO2/mile

Total (Diesel) CO2 output/100 miles: 100 * 259 gCO2/mile + 3.800 gCO2WTT/100mi = 29.700 gCO2/100mi

Electric Vehicle: 53.700 gCO2/100mi (California)
Electric Vehicle: 60.960 gCO2/100mi (Montana + heating)
MB E350 BlueTec: 29.700 gCO2/100mi (California/Montana/Antarctic/...)

CO2 emissions for the production of an EV and E350 are similar.
Additional environmental concerns related to CO2 emissions at the production of Lithium-Ion batteries: 100 kgCO2/kWh
E.g.: 85 kWh ---> 85 kWh * 100 kgCO2/kWh = 8,5 tonsCO2

So, the EV comes at 0 Miles with 8,5 tonsCO2 carbon debt.

Something wrong: here the calculation with real world values from Germany 2013
Electric Vehicle:... 30.170 gCO2/100mi (cold environment, heating required)
MB E350 BlueTec:. 29.700 gCO2/100mi (Sunshine State/cold environment/...)

Germany 2013 electricity generation efficiency: 510 gCO2/kWh
Gross production of electricity power plant energy mix: 632,1 MkWh (coal, gas, petroleum products, nuclear power, regenerative energies)
Net consumption of electricity: 563,1 MkWh
Total efficency ---> 89% efficency

Electric vehicle 80% efficency from power outlet to electric motor (high-voltage battery, power electronics unit, voltage converter, ...)
Electric vehicle total efficiency = 0,89*0,80 = 0,712 ---> 71,2%

Power consumption achieved by EV drivers: 37 kWh/100mi
Total EV CO2 emissions in Sunshine State:... 37 kWh/100mi * 100/71 * 510 gCO2/kWh ................= 26.580 gCO2/100mi (Sunshine State)
Total EV CO2 emissions in cold environment: 42 (37+heater) kWh/100mi * 100/71 * 510 gCO2/kWh = 30.170 gCO2/100mi (cold environment, heating required)

Mercedes E350 BlueTec
Haulage and refining of Gasoline and Diesel Well-To-Tank --> 38 gCO2/mile ---> 3.800 gCO2/100mi
Fuel consumption of 32 mpg, 0,117 l/mile, 0,031 gal/mile ---> 259 gCO2/mile
Total (Diesel) CO2 output/100 miles: 100 * 259 gCO2/mile + 3.800 gCO2WTT/100mi = 29.700 gCO2/100mi
