Dodge confirmes new Viper for 2013

(Found on leftlanenews.com)

Enthusiasts, rejoice. Dodge head Ralph Giles has confirmed that the Viper supercar will return for the 2013 model year. The Dodge Viper went out of production earlier this year after an 18-year run.

Giles revealed earlier today that the Chrysler board has given final approval for the new Viper. The third-generation Dodge Viper will make its debut during the summer of 2012 as a 2013 model.

Although previous reports suggested the next-gen Viper could share its underpinnings with Ferrari or Alfa Romeo – thanks to Chrysler’s tie-up with Fiat – Giles says that will not be the case. The Viper will continue to ride on a unique platform, although some components could be borrowed from Fiat.

The 2013 Viper will be heavily restyled both inside and out, but its familiar shape should remain. Giles says the Viper will retain its classic long hood/short deck layout.

Giles failed to detail the Viper’s powertrain, but an updated version of the current 8.4L V10 is expected. However, direct-injection and Fiat’s MultiAir technology should boost power to at least 700 horsepower, while still being emissions-compliant through 2018.

Dodge will lean heavily on Fiat for the engineering of the next Viper, resulting in a much more drivable car. “We will use their expertise to open the performance envelope in the Viper,” Gilles said. “Fiat has an awesome ability to tune cars. I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We’ve never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car.”

This Chrysler - Fiat consortium for the Viper would be exciting. Looking forward to see the finished product

I think this is great news. I've loved Vipers ever since I was a kid and like the direction Fiat is taking with the Viper. If they are able to put their engineering expertise into this car, while maintaining its grass roots, the Viper will become a serious contender with the likes of Lambo, and Audi R8 to name a few.

Sounds like a winning combination to me! If it has flappy paddles though, the Viper will officially have jumped the shark.

dubcars101 is an unknown quantity at this point
Yeah, but it's not gonna be anything like the last Viper because Electronic Stability Control will be mandatoy in all New Vehicles by 2012, so the 2013 Viper won't have the same raw features that we all know and love.

curious to see how this turns out. The Viper has some catching up to do when it comes to technology and gadgets.
