Post Superformance GT40 MkI is vehicular sashimi, raw and delicious

From Autoblog:
"As much as we enjoy piloting modern machinery, there's something special about vintage vehicles, and that something is the pure, unvarnished connection between man and machine. But it's not always good. Things get dicey when the driving experience is a little too vintage. Despite our supreme adoration of the racing greats of yesteryear, clawing at the wheel, pulverizing the brake pedal, dumping buckets of sweat onto the leather seat and having our sphincter perform kegels isn't always our preferred flavor of fun. Some days, we're just not that hardcore. So the vintage vehicles we've come to love most aren't genuinely vintage at all – they're classic bodies wrapped around modern mechanicals. The Rizk RA is a prime example, and now there's this: the Superformance GT40 MkI, a car so raw that if it were edible, they'd slap "organic" on it and sell it at Whole Foods.

Superformance says it builds the GT40 so close to the original specifications that "over two thirds of the rolling chassis's parts are interchangeable with that of an original car, including the monocoque style chassis." That steel monocoque chassis is covered in a steel body, and then fitted with either a small block or big block engine, depending on customer preference.

Features tying our tester to the original are everywhere, while others variants have been upgraded to bring the standards into the new century. Seats with silver rivets make you feel like Gurney, but the specially designed air-conditioning unit up front means you don't sweat like the F1 legend. The replica also sports an aluminum crossflow radiator and oil cooler with dual electric fans, braided lines, and a shifter and handbrake moved to the center tunnel instead of the door sill. And Superformance does its tuning homework, dialing in the suspension based on the engine mounted behind your back.

The best way to describe driving a GT40 is to imagine one of those car adverts where people are suspended in air, driving a few seats and an engine, but no body. Now put those people's butts about seven millimeters off the ground and make them go really, really fast. Then add a lot of noise. That's driving a Superformance GT40... only better."

I would love to own one of those. I think they look better than most modern supercars.

Awesome car but for the money, I'd rather spend another $10Gs on the newer Ford GT.

It would be cool if you could actually use these for historic racing. If that were the case, I'd have one of these over the newer car in a heart beat. I only say this b/c I was sick today and watched all my recored episodes of Discovery HD Theatre's GT Racer.

More than $10G's. I was in the market for a MKII before the TT and lightly used ones were in the 80's/90's. FGT=$150K+

Truly a RAAAAAAW sports car. Had a very promising lead on a beautiful Red/white stripe MKII. But I had to make sure I could actually fit in one of those things. A local guy I found on GT40.com was very kind enough to let me stop by and check his out.
First thing that struck me: This thing is small and LOW! I'm 6'2 and the roof came up to my waist. Climbing in is a acrobatic feat in itself. Had to take the steering wheel off to make this even remotely possible.

Headroom: none. My head was touching the roof even with the Gurney bubble. Helmet out of the question. Slouching in the seat gave me another inch or two. But not a comfortable way to drive. Owner is 6'0-6'1, but he can easily drive this thing. Think it depends if your height is in your legs or torso.

Footwell: holy cramped, Batman. Both of my feet were jammed together. Couldn't get my left foot on and off the clutch without contorting a bit. Knees crammed against the dash.

Okay, not looking good so far.....He then took me out for a spin with me riding shotgun. Hmmm....even more cramped. Think it's a 60/40 driver/passenger seat split. Only way to sit was to keep my legs bolt straight in the even smaller passenger footwell.

But.....then he fired up that badboy. Holy crap. Music to my ears. Took it for a brief spirited drive around the neighborhood. Jeebus that car is scary fast! Sound of American muscle right behind your head. This was also in the middle of an Arizona summer. Probably around 6 PM and still about 100 degrees in the shade. The heat that engine puts out is immense. The air conditioning was blasting but still hot. Can't imagine what it would have been like without it. Owner said he replaced the rear plexiglass with real glass. "It reduces the noise and heat a lot". What!!?!?!? It was hotter AND louder than this??
In the 20 minute drive, we got a bunch of thumbs up and stares. Certainly draws attention.

Okay, GT40 was a no go for me. We get back to his house and he opens up his third garage door. Shiny white/blue stripe Ford GT. Pulley and some other stuff slapped on. Awwwww, come on! "Hop in". Plop myself in the infinitely more comfortable modern iteration of this beast. Love, love, love that car. Just as scary fast, so much more civilized.

FGT=I want but cannot afford.
GT40=fun, not something to take to the grocery store. If you wrench your own cars and want something totally raw, this may be your car.

Sorry for the lengthy post, just thought it was a nice little story.

Lenghty post or not, you nailed it!! I'm 6'1, mostly legs, it's still a squeeze in the footwell and around the steering, but once you're in, well, like I said, you nailed it. Superformance really does a great job!!!
