Question Entry-Level McLaren

When's it coming? How will it perform? How much will it cost?

I know this is probably several years away, but does anyone know what we can expect?

There are only three cars that really (potentially) interest me - 997 GT3, 991 GT3 (maybe), entry-level McLaren. I think I would lease the McLaren, for a variety of reasons.

I think we can expect something fantastic.

I know someone who has seen it in its present concept form and they suggest it is quite excellent. I certainly hope to be able to afford one by the time they release it. I wouldn't expect sales to begin until around 2015 but we should see the car unveiled prior to that.

My bet is that dollar for dollar it will be the best sports car money can buy in its class. The line for this one may grow to be quite long.

I hope you're right. I think McLaren can potentially "beat" the 911 at its own game, even though so many would be competitors have fallen short over the years. The Benz SL, BMW 6-series, Jag XK, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, etc. are too soft - even in AMG, M, R, etc. form - and only really compete with the PDK/cabriolet end of the market. The R8 is a strong competitor, I will admit. The Evora falls short because of its prosaic engine, not to mention long-term doubt about the company's viability. The baby McLaren will probably be similar to the Evora in some ways - small production English sports car, mid-engined, etc. However, if McLaren is able to deliver a car that costs maybe $115k out the door to start that features a bespoke engine and shares parts only with other McLarens, it will be a very special car.

Since most 12Cs are going out the door at about $250k-$300k I'd expect the Baby Mac to be a bit more money than you are hoping.

We also have 3 years of inflation to look forward to - ugh. :-\

I think it would be a misstep to build a softer "base" car and then a more aggressive car that would compete with the 991 GT3 (RS) and Turbo. Instead, they should just build a car that competes against the GT3 and Turbo variants, which could justifiably cost a bit more than the Porsches when similarly optioned, provided the McLaren retains the bespoke qualities of the MP4-12C (or shares the switchgear, etc. of the more expensive car).

I would be "interested" if the thing is around 140-160. Whether or not I did anything is another thing but Id love to be in the Maclaren family.
