A hint of Motorsport

There is nothing more exciting than hearing one of our clients say something like “I don’t know if this is possible, but I’d really like to have ________ for my M3”. Although we can appreciate any and all modifications that make an M car just a bit more individual, there is nothing like a truly bespoke, custom built part to really get us inspired.

Recently M3Post member JEllis approached IND with just such a request. Inspired by the fearsome appearance of the M3 GTR, our client wanted to recreate the look and feel of this amazing race car by adding a part directly from BMW’s Motorsport program. The Motorsport mirrors seen in this thread are not easy to come by, and require favors from some great friends simply to purchase the parts, but the bases we not have that enable the mirrors to connect to a standard E9x M3 road car are even more unique.

Simply seeing the incredible carbon fiber mirrors in our hands was an amazing experience, as the incredibly light weight and flawless construction of these pieces is something that can only be found in professional racing circles, but we knew that this was only beginning of our journey. The BMW Motorsport mirrors are designed to connect directly with the GTR door panel and have mounting points specifically made to interface with this door. As a result, the mirrors have no way of being fitted to a road going M3.

Over the course of several months, we set out to create a master part entirely by hand. Imitating the curves and contours of the inside and outside of the standard M3 mirror base, we created a base plate that would bolt to an original BMW door on one side, and the BMW Motorsport mirrors on the other. Dozens of man-hours later, our technician carved and sanded his way to the shape we needed, meticulously shaping the inner mounting boss contours as well as the outside shape to perfection.

The final product is a polyurethane plastic base plate which gives a factory-like fit and appearance, and allows us to achieve our client’s dream of installing the genuine BMW Motorsport mirrors from the amazing M3 GTR on his road going M3. Enjoy the photos, and stay tuned for updated shots of the installed mirrors!

Final product shot! Ready to ship

Looks good but it would be great to have a front pic of the entire car with the new mirrors to see what it looks like.
