AutoExpress pits the new M6 Cabrio against the SL63 AMG
#31
End of the day it boils down to driver preference. The journalist may just favour the SL over the M6, but another journalist pitting the two cars head to head may prefer the M6. I'm an M purist (and yes they have gotten a bit soft) but I would look at an M6 before an SL, that's just me.

Please enlighten me.
If memory serves me right the SLR was not sold by MB... It was sold by McLaren, which if we were to bring that into the equation I'd have to bring in the F1 from McLaren (in which case you should feel sorry for the SLR)
The clk dtm... Well lets just say that other than the exclusivity and price rape it doesn't outright beat and "whore" on a regular E92 on a track.
The CLK GTR well were talking about cars that were developed hand in hand for simple homologation standards which BMW simply was never interested because of their F1 involvement which btw at this time in F1 BMW was certainly doing much better than the "AMG MERCEDES F1" team has done so.
I will hand you the SLS is a great achievement but it also took them to hand over a car to their AMG department to be able to make a proper sports car... Not Mercedes Benz. BMW's game is to take a regular production car and give it an edge.
The day "M" makes a bottoms up car from scratch they will not have the short comings the SLS has.
And just for your info, the M3 GTS was sold in less than 24 hours at a much higher price than your current MB C63 Black Series (which took about a month if not more to sell out)
Btw I suggest you check out AMG's website it clearly states the SL63 delivers super car performance.
You should also dig out of the MB world every now and then and check out real statistics.

You can try to reduce the supercars to nothing if it makes you feel better.
Matter of fact is BMW never made a proper supercar and Mercedes made dozens.
And talking about racing heritage?
Dont even get me started.
At the end of the day I am right about the fact that BMW struggles to sell cars over the 150k usd and 100k euro mark.
Hence being a business and not a hobby their board does not green light projects near those sums. Not even a BMW m7 let alone a proper supercar.
They should keep at selling 3 series.. They do that better than anyone

Just test drove the M6 coupe with cf roof!
Went to test drive the M5 and hear the B&O stereo and check out the new techno on the car. The M5 was sold but they showed me the tech and let me hear the B&O, then I noticed a M6 coupe next to us. Asked to take it for a drive.
Very peppy from 0-30 but thats about it. We drove it with everything in sport mode and I used auto and then manual paddles. In third gear WOT from 60mph was very underwhelming. My CTT was much more impressive, and the 2013 SL550 I test drove was even a little faster at highway speeds. I was telling the sales mgr that was riding with me, "see I am at 60 in third gear at 4k rpm, there should be much more pull than this?????", he did not reply.
The sound system was great but not as good as Burmester in the CTT.
It looked good, rode very smooth. But for 123k, I would much rather have a fully loaded 991S with Burmester and some power. If you think about it the 991 has 160hp less and over 100lb/tq less, and from my extensive experience in it from the Masters class at PSDS it is so much quicker and rides much nicer.

Here is the article version:
Mercedes SL63 AMG vs rivals | Auto Express
They even pit it against the Jaguar XKR-S but need to buy the mag to read the full comparison.
I've been an avid fan of BMW since I was a teenager and our family has owned different cars ranging from 3 series to 5 series over the past 12 years. Currently drive a 2011 335 coupe but honestly speaking BMW has been slacking a lot - from customer service to quality of parts (HPFP, turbo issues, software etc). Their desire to be the #1 sales leader in the luxury sector have enabled their customers to obtain cars at invoice or below invoice but it has come at a cost. The high volume of sales have degraded the dealership experience especially in comparison to the MB dealership here, where I take in my pop's e550 car for service.
As for the driving experience, e92 M3 is in a different class compared to the rest of the field. However, I'm shocked at what has happened to the M5/M6. The weight increase is substantial. A part of me expected this, when BMW decided that the 5 and 7 series will be sharing same platform etc but I thought M division would be able to do something to contain it. The thing that seperated BMWs from Mercs, Lexus' and Audis is unfortunately the same thing that enabled the Merc to win in this comparison - nimbleness/agility.
Despite all this, I would still take the M6 over the SL63. Maybe it's brand loyalty or just the fact that I don't think I'd be shopping for an SL63 if I was in the market for a true 2 seat roadster at that price range.
Then again, if I was considering a 4 seat convertible, I would take the Porsche cab over the M6.

Here's to add to that Mercedes Benz racing history that you speak of.
