E60 M5 - 6 Speed or SMG?

What do you guys think? The SMG seems nice for times when you're stuck in traffic, but is it as clunky as some claim?

I have only driven 6 speed on the M5, I drove the SMG on an M3. I prefer 6 speed personally

having owned an E39, i'm used to the 6 speed. with that being said the tiptronic in my rs6 was fantastic for commuting in LA traffic. that however was a true auto. i've heard that the smg in auto mode is worthless. is the smg in the m3 different from that in the m5?

Mark, i read the M5Board for a while regarding this decision.

Go for the SMG, it suits the car much better from everything i've read. I am fortunate to hardly be on the freeway (less than twice a month on avg) though i would go for an SMG M5 in a heartbeat if it were more frequent.

I also would say go for the SMG. The car was built around that transmission. Hopefully they get the DCT in the M5/6 soon.

SMG unquestionably. It really opens the car up. It's one of the best F1-style gearboxes ever built (and probably that ever will be built now that most companies will be going to a DSG type as the F1 cars).
