BMW M3 four-door to arrive before coupe

BMW M3 four-door to arrive before coupe

While the controversy surrounding the naming convention of forthcoming BMW M cars still rages on, it appears that, for the first time, the sedan will arrive before the coupe.

Normally, the M3 Coupe (slated to be called M4, apparently) would come first, but as the 3 Series sedan has been released, engineering work is well underway for the M variant.

BMW spokesperson Piers Scott spoke to Teamspeed, saying that "it is not clear at this stage, but the sedan may arrive before coupe".

Translated to account for PR spin, the sedan will arrive first. Of course, the 4 Series coupe won't be far behind, being well along in its testing phase, with the M model being easily translated from the standard coupe.

Power for the M3 is expected to be around 450hp, easily eclipsing the current M3, and will most likely be from a turbocharged six-cylinder powerplant.

And apparently it does feature a more quiet design, not very specific to M models, if it is to judge by the spy pics.

I really hope they keep the design "language" to sedan only.

I hope they don't call the coupe M4...seems more fitting for the 4 door spec.

From what I've seen and heard thus so far, I honestly think that the F30 generation isn't that impressive. BMW needs to go back to it's roots and really re-evaluate what made their "M" cars great and then re-design their cars accordingly.

The M3 is dead as far as I'm concerned. A 3700+lb car isn't really a sports car anymore, just a semi-powerful barge. BMW is still building great engines, and comfortable chassis, but these cars are no more than daily drivers in my opinion.

IMO it looks like a facelift and not a new model with a new, revised design. Most of the Germans car manufacters are having the same problem VW(Touareg looks a lot like the Golf), Audi(6,7,8 look pretty much the same (->headlights, tailights etc...)

calling the next generation M3 coupe an M4 will be a major fail

i can already see them bringing back the M3 for next generation and firing the idiot who suggested the idea in the first place

Didn't they cancel the previous gen 4-door upon realizing that, uh, nobody wanted a 4-door!?

The M3 has been dead since the S50B32 E36 that did not make it to the U.S.

We are talking Aluminum door skin, hood, and trunk lid with floating rotors, 6 speed with two different diff ratio for you to choose, forged wheels, and a 321HP engine in a coupe that weighed less than 3100 pounds, in 1997.

Since then they have gotten more HP, but much, much too fat to be anything but regular daily driver.

Not to be confused with this M4.
