Spied: 2012 BMW 4-Series Coupe
These are the very first spy shots of the upcoming coupe version of the new BMW 3-series rumored to be named the 4-series. On this prototype, we can clearly make out the shape of the upcoming two-door coupe which should be larger than the 3-series, and visibly appears to have stretchered wheelbase.
Speculation is that the new 4-series will feature both two-door and four-door sport coupe variants (as BMW will is doing with the 6-series as well), to compete against the likes of the Audi A5 range, and that BMW may also introduce a cabriolet version too. From the looks of it the 3-Series sedan appears to have a nice flow then this stretched out looking coupe.
Expect all power-plants to be carried over from the newly unveiled 3-Series sedan range.

Yeah well guessing it will be 3 series sedan/wagon 4 series coupe (2and4 door)/cab and same with 5/6 series. Sort of what Audi has done with A4/A5/A6/A7. So wouldn't call it cannibalizing, just renaming. Why? dunno.....

The 4 series is just like Audi's 5 series - there are no more A4 coupes/cabrios because that's exactly what the 5 series is.
It's a smart move - it allows small variations between the two to better tailor them to the customer. Look at Audi's success with the A4 and A5.

Good point, but in my opinnion that would be a mistake brand wise. Like rebranding the golf, mustang or something. Maybe they make another stupid M decision and rebrand it to 4M or something....

An Audi A5 was normally a A4 coupe/cabriolet, but Audi A5 sounds more prestige than A4 coupe. And so you can sell it for a higher price.
I think that's the reason why the new 3 coupe will be called 4 series.
