New M5 uses Active Sound Design
#23
I can't imagine getting goosebumps when hitting the gas and knowing this sound comes out of a speaker. horrible thought

I'm just having a hard time taking all this "Oh my God, this is horrible, //M have lost their way" type of talk seriously, because it has been like that every time the first rumours about a new M-car starts flying. There was no limit to how awful the F10 M5 was going to be; it was not a V10 because the evil tree-huggers ruined everything for us, it was too fat, the turbocharging would ruin everything and the styling would make children explode on sight and so on, and when it comes along, it turns out that hey, it's actually a good car that's nice to drive. And until I hear from the horse/owner's mouth that this system is utter and complete crap, I am going to give the guys and girls at /M the benefit of a doubt.
To those that claim that /M has lost their way, I'd argue that if that's your point of view, then that train left the station about the same time that they introduced the E36 M3 and moved from producing homologation specials to producing fast saloons. They may be called /M for Motorsport, but they produce roadcars, and that's the way it has been for a long time.

If BMW couldn't get a turbocharged V8 to sound good without getting a synthesizer involved, someone needs to call Ferrari and suggest they offer a retrofit to all the F40 owners, because clearly their cars sound quiet and crap.
I'm in agreement, I'm sure it will sound good, but knowing it's not authentic will just eat away at me. That said, how long will it be before the aftermarket offers the proper sound, and you can pull the plug on the Playstation option...

I would expect this kind of crap from Lexus, but not BMW.
Prius and Leaf will soon have this "performance" option too, with sound from a CGT. Oh, wait, don't we already have a movie on that?
If you are a boy, don't pretend to be a man. That's all I am saying...

But hey, maybe I'm just too suspicious and it's not a crude and juvenile ad hominem, but genuine and well-intended advice. In which case thank you, but you misjudged your audience quite badly.

wtf has the automotive world come to

The problem is not that they put this technology in. I'm sure it can be turned off. The problem is that they even THOUGHT this was a good idea. What's wrong with exhaust flaps? It would be so simple to have exhaust flap open/close setting that could work in conjunction with the M-button.
If BMW continues this way, I better start saving money to buy a CPO E60 M5 6MT to add to my garage, because who knows what 'features' the next M3 will have
