Pricing of the new M5 will be close to the X6M. This was a hint from BMW passed to my friend who is at M Fest in Germany.

Karim, as Gustav put it, there are differences between powerplants. The M5 S63Tü (Tü is German and stands for 'Technische Überholung' which translates to 'technical revision') engine builds on X5/6M S63 engine. Engineers wanted to make sure the M5 had the typical M feel (high revving and sharp throttle response).

M5 S63Tü differences:

Valvetronic
Cross-bank exhaust manifold
10.0:1 compression ratio (higher than X5/6M S63)
1.5 bar, which is 22 psi maximum boost pressure (higher than S63 1.2 bar)
560hp @5,750 – 7,000 rpm (5 hp more than S63 which is @6000 rpm)
501 lb-ft torque @1,500 – 5,750 rpm (501 lb-ft 1,500 – 5,650 rpm for S63...so slightly higher)
7200 rpm redline vs 7000 rpm for S63 (higher for M5)

Good info from South at M5Post

Two more innovations of the S63Tü:

- Innovative solenoid valve injectors in the new BMW M5 engine use multiple injections to achieve an extremely precise mixture preparation.

- VALVETRONIC

This is the biggest difference. As BMW puts it:

"Throughout each of its four previous generations, the heart of the BMW M5 has been its high-revving, high output-per-liter engine fed by individual throttle plates.

The new M5 engine introduces VALVETRONIC variable valve control system for the first time on a BMW M engine – effectively providing 16 individual throttles.

VALVETRONIC is BMW’s patented fully variable valve control system that eliminates the need for conventional throttles. Engine power is instead controlled directly by varying the amount of lift of the intake valves. Throttle losses in the gas cycle are minimized with this system, which has a positive impact on both the efficiency and torque. VALVETRONIC has also sharpened the responsiveness of this engine compared to the V10 engine it replaces."

^ thanks!

Concerning Valvetronic, the reason it says that it is effectively like having 16 throttle boddies is because each valve has a 2 stage lift (x 8 cylinders explaining where that number came from).

But, it should be noted that BMW engines utilizing Valvetronic still have conventional throttle bodies (two in the S63) in case the Valvetronic system fails. They can be seen in the picture you posted above.

That's quite a claim they're making, that this new turbocharged engine will have better throttle response than that jewel of an engine in the previous generation. Surely they must mean something different by 'responsiveness'?

There is no way this engine will have a faster response than the S85.

Going to test a 550i tomorrow morning. The idea is to get buy-in from my wife, then order an M5. Thanks for posting this info - it'll definitely help make the decision easier.

I'm distraught having just the GTI!

Ok, Captain cut/paste.

I indicated 'basically', as in not exactly the same.

That said, it's apparently not as 'basically the same' as I assumed.

Some great technical information on the new M5 from BMWBLOG's visit to the M testing facility. More here

Briefly explains M5's S63Tu vs X5M S63. I didn't know the output of the X5/6M varied with gearing.

I have never considered buying a BMW. But this is a legitimate option.
