All the details of the fifth generation BMW M5

Some of you guys have really been putting out some great threads.
Secondly, I must admit I was way off in thinking the current M5 as being much heavier than the e39 variant. Thanks for putting that info side by side.

Looking forward to this car.
A few things that I noticed:
-80 liter fuel tank is a welcome change over the tiny tank installed on the E60/63 M5/M6.
-Cd drag is surprisingly high at 0.33
-Brakes are enormous at 400mm front and 396mm rears.
-Is the engine identical to that of the X5/6 M? (Misha wanting for your answer on this one).

I noticed the increased Cd as well. That, coupled with a higher frontal area means that the drag area (the real determinant of aero drag) will be higher than the E60. That could mean that at higher speeds, the cars will be pretty evenly matched, with perhaps the edge going to the E60 at the very top end, but at sub-100 MPH speeds, the new one should be considerably faster, especially if they release the AWD version.

Same displacement, turbos/configuration, compression ratio.
Don't know if the 5 extra hp from the X5/6M's is just marketing or a by product of some minor increase in boost or change to breathing.
Either way, it's a great engine, has no lag whatsoever, it should boogie hauling (just) 4200'ish lbs.

Basically, yes.

"In short everything is different. Different pistons, reworked (modified block), different conrods etc. So forget about the talk that this is a "X5M engien with raised rev limiter".
Focus has been on raised flow into and out from the turbos. So the intake manifold is different and larger, the exhaust manifold is much wider as well.
Also, it has Vanos and Valkvetronic, X5M does not have Valvetronic.
The turbos are different with significantly refined technologie allows them to spool up more. They have a higher boost as well, around 1,5 compared to 1-1,2 bar for the X5M.
There is also a constant higher revlimiter of 7200 rpms as oppose to the X5M which actually has a lower RPM limiter than 7000 (6500) on 3rd gear and uo. M5 has 72000 rpm limiter on all gears." - Gustav, M5Board.com
