A clean CB E39 is teh yumms!
The consumables you mentioned are what is keeping me from this car atm. I don't have a local indie yet that I would trust the car to, even though some of those parts you mentioned aren't difficult fixes.

Well, rarely up for sale in the U.S.
There are a handful of 3.8 federalized E34 M5 sedans and touring. Those are worth getting, as the 3.6 U.S. version are really not that fast at all, and most have been run to the ground. The Euro federalized M5's have kept their value (low 20's for a sedan and high 20's for a touring), so they are owned by people that care about resale and maintenance.
I almost bought one, but found out that one of the panels had rusts and was then resprayed, which makes it not as desirable as a semi collectible.

Not modding the car.
At this point in the E39 M5's life, I am keeping it all stock.
Let's not kid ourselves with its design defect of recirculating ball joint and 4000 pound weight, it's never going to be anything more than a manual fast sedan that handles reasonably well with nice German paint, fit and finish.
I will leave that job to the M64 powered P car which we'll get down the road.
