what to look for in an E39 M5

It's sad how many of them are badly neglected, wrecked, and with lots of stories.
It's the M story. When they get cheaper, people who don't understand that they are expensive cars new strated owning them, but could not properly service them. I mean, I saw M5's with completely chewed up steering wheel, misaligned hood, wheels "refinished" with rattle can, multi shade panels from super subpar repair, oils everywhere, intakes, valve cover, everywhere, etc.
It was pathetic.

You hit the nail on the head with the statement that they are cheap today. Too many "E36 M3" kids found a way to buy the M5 and dont care. Beat the crap out of it, dad fixes it and sell it to the next guy. To some degree due to this exact situation the M5 board it starting to feel like Bimmerfest and L 4 P with a bunch of kids with no manners who know everything. Too bad such a classic has taken such a dump in value. I don't mean to dis the M5Board, Gustav still has a great place and I still use it for reference, but I used to call it home like I now do with TS and I can't handle most of the members anymore.
By the way the new sponsor over there Evolve looks to have a great deal on software and headers, 50hp for $2500, I love the Supersprint stuff and have a few friends with the full header back solution, but for $2500, I don't think I can turn the Evolve product down. I am going to give it 6 months and see how people like it then I am all over it.
A couple years ago a collectors employee had 3 of his cars for sale in as new condition with like 300 miles on each. We all know low milage cars have their own issues, but had I still been shopping I would have bought one if his "new" cars for $45k in a heartbeat.

HD, was not trying to bash in anyway.. I don't feel like "diving in" as it's really not the time nor the place... I did see you took a new job, but would have sworn it was still a 100% commish job, so that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Only you and your wife know your situation and I wish you nothing but luck no matter what direction you head.
Love the E39 beast, just think IF you are not buying the BEST example available you are going to find a lot of problems, I still believe any e39 M5 under 21-22k is scary, since most people still see a lot of value in these cars when they are well taken care of with a documented past.

Buzz, like u said IF... Anyone willing to part ways will a well taken care of 02+ is fishy in my mind.... They money it cost to keep in pristine shape isn't cheap.... Also 110k miles is pretty high, most are between 65-90k
Just my .02
