Its not a hard resource drain, look them up in the DMV system go find them determine if they are legal and crunch them if they are not. Heck if they were brought in by a actual company it would take access to the database and two days to find the owners. Then tax the living tar out of the owners to make up for the money the government spent.

If we could all bring in car easily it would be great for us crap for the country. Limited safety, cash going out of the country for a hard good, and no smog/crash data for the rest of us who have to drive among them.

I agree 100%

How much 'effort' that is being put into this situation is ridiculous

You've got a lot more to fear from a bluehair in a perfectly DOT/etc legal Escalade barreling towards you at 80 mph while applying makeup and yacking on the phone than a Skyline driven by someone who's rather keen on keeping it in one piece.

DOT/FMVSS import requirements are draconian on a good day with a tail wind. Eff the effing effers.

I love the fact that our airbags are calibrated for unbelted adult males.

Or that we got crap lights instead of the awesome BMW smiley's in the 80's and 90's for example.

All courtesy of DOT and FMVSS.

There is no reason why cars like the RS4 Avant, E34 M5 touring, or the real S50B32 M3 was never available in the U.S.

They are perfectly safe, perfectly clean, but because of the cost of doing FMVSS tests, low volume special cars continue to not make it to the U.S.
