The new STi is really good but I have always been an Evo fan…
What are you looking to get out of the car?
Both are compact, nimble, economic, fast…
Mods are very much available over the net but who is going to install and tune? Talk to the different tuners you have in your area and see if they can help you out with your decision.

But I got an opinion from another friend of mine (who has been a true Evo fan and currently owns a 8) told me the legend of Evo has ended with 9. 10 is a different story, it's a car that has been built to compete with M series bimmers, not subaru's. Subaru is more like a go card car, so much more fun to drive, and that's what I'm looking for.

from someone who has owned 2 sti's and 2 evo's and modded them all. The sti is the more reliable vehicle. evo's are very hit or miss, my evo 8 was great, my evo 9 was a turd from the factory. they both have their pluses and minuses, either way you go you are in for a fun car, i can also make it faster then your porsche (1/4 mile wise...not top speed

If I make it as fast as my tt, then it's reliability will be doubtfull
I'm not into that as I said before, I'm into making it a powerful but mostly fun street car. It would be enough for me if I can chase a stock 997tt

Either one will be great, but the Evos seem to have that little something extra. If I were spending my own money, I'd get an Evo X MR.
FWIW, my old Evo VIII was certainly as fast at the contemporary Turbo at the time (996TT). I spent maybe $2500 on bolt-ons and tuning. No turbo swap, no cams.

My friend had an Evo 8 and he was keeping up with F430 F1 until 200-210 km/h range. Amazing things can be achieved on both cars. And Evo X is the clear "apperance" winner, but there's something different about Subaru, at least for me

I am a bit confused on this talk of the Evo X competing with German car's and not with the STI anymore. It may be a bit heavier than the STI but 9 out of 10 road test's have the Evo X quicker than the STI around a track. I was in the same dilemma as you not to long ago but after a lot of research, test driving both the car's, reading all the review's I could find, and finding out how amazing the X's are responding to mod's I went ahead and bought one (the Evo that is). I've had the car for about 8 month's and haven't regretted it one bit. About a month ago I had some coilover's installed and it really is amazing how this car handles now, it literally feel's like the car is on rails.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is test drive both the car's and read all the review's you can on both car's and then make your mind up, choose the one that you feel is a better car for your needs. Don't let people on a forum make the decision for you.

Is the one exception you're referring to the BMI race at Tsukuba? In that race, the 2008STI (GR) beat the Evo 10, the Evo 9, and the previous generation STI (GD). The Japanese version is definitely different from the one we get here in the U.S.. I wish we could get that one here because it has a quicker steering ratio (interchangeable). The biggest complaints about the STI I can think of include the persistent understeer and the numb steering. Both seem to have easy remedies which sound like it shouldn't be a big deal to you. I personally like lighter weight and the 5 door design of the GR STI over the Evo X. I even prefer the Evo 9 over the 10 because it has less weight, and because the car doesn't drive you with all its magic electronic handling gadgetry.
