Like others here, I follow the RS market very closely. If you can buy a straight, no stories car, even with 14,000 miles, under $120,000, you are making a great buy. As others have said here, the RS market has a large supply and demand inbalance currently. Forget what cars were selling for last year, it isn't relevant.

Top down on the market for 2011 RS right now: highly optioned cars with less than 1,000 miles are within 10% of MSRP; with mileage below 10,000, 15-20% below MSRP. There aren't many above 10,000 miles, so the data won't be as solid. Cars with fewer options, more track time, and in white (simply because it's the most common color) will command slightly less.

It seems that the world woke up to the fact that this series (starting in 2007 and ending with the 4.0 and GT2RS) is the end of a long and wonderful era at Porsche. Even the cars coming in 2015 and beyond that will be badged as RS will be significantly different in ethos than these, hence the increased demand today. The only real soft spot right now is with the GT2RS, which is a real mystery. Personally, I think that car many years from now will be recognized on par with the F40 and F50 as one of the truly great supercars of its era; today, you can buy them for 10-20% less than MSRP.

Peter, if you know of any 4.0's other than white (since those are available) that can be bought for $230-240,000 or close, please let me know, I'm a buyer. And the PTS cars, since there are somewhere between 9-12 in the country, are a market unto themselves, just look at the blue one Kevin sold in a day last week.

Spot on.
Sold my 20k tracked 10RS about 9 months ago for $115k with all OEM parts and a lot of track mods.
Today the buyer can make money on that car at 23k miles.

Sold my second 3.8 RS with 4k miles, 3k track for much higher and for what I had in it within a couple of months to buy my 4.0.

Both very low option cars.

All the good, no story's 3.8RS sell in days if priced to market. Same with 4.0's.

In regards to MSRP; to some less is more, at least I have been asked several times to sell my 7k miles, tracked car with no options for as much as some higher MSRP cars. Mine is 3020 lbs without PCCB but otherwise lightest possible configuration; lightweight battery and radio delete and that is with heavy Club sport roll bar, and everything on board.

White is weird, I love it, had 4 white ones now (neighbors think I paint wheels often LOL, CUP car white is the most common but mine is also in the colors like in the original Porsche brochure, (white, red inside, white wheels) and that I think is also why orange .1RS is the most popular and the grey .2RS is the most popular. I also add zero value to options, except PTS, all other options just add weight.

I'm looking at black ones (PTS probably out of my league) for fun when they pop up and at the GT2RS just to change and, like you I think the GT2RS is somewhat overlooked. I don't have the experience on track with Turbo cars and have been told the 4.0 is the way to go by those who owned both, so like many I am more comfortable with the screaming NA engine. Maybe that is the reason?

Mine is all detailed and showroom ready now with no free time to go to the track the next 6 months( never skipped a month the last 6 years but work took over.) so I am tempted to give in. But what would be next? I'm doubtful about the next RS and not interested in the GT3, so we are a few years away from a possible proper replacement.

Thats how many options there were. Especially the grey black, which costs more money. I would say the 135 to 145 is a nice price if mileage is below 7 or 8. And keep the option list in mind. Unless you want to just track the car, having some comfort options are great.
Fixed it for you.

Hello Secretcollector,

"Personally, I think that car many years from now will be recognized on par with the F40 and F50 as one of the truly great supercars of its era; today, you can buy them for 10-20% less than MSRP."

I couldnt agree more..the 997 GT3 4.0 and the GT2RS were last drivers cars - EVER. Everything thats coming now is hybrid..fundamentally different. You are fully correct..I also think it will get the status of the F40..and prices will go crazy..i wouldnt be suprised if in 20 years they would be worth 3 times as much.

The only car they we have forgotten in this equation..are the Carrera GT..it certainly also belongs there, Enzo, plus a few other "raw cars".

I cant imagine that a 918 will become one day a collectors car..
