I don't get it, no manufacturer has done such a drastic change from one to the other. Even Ferrari "slowly" fazed out the manual.

How can Porsche justify this?

So all of you who say you won't buy it.....then what will you buy?

lopro 02-17-2012 06:37 PM

Jus to clarify... When we say PDK (with paddle shift) vs manual gear box AND when we refer to Porsche's latest racing cars (997 R € RSR), we are confusing the issue. PDK as it's name indicates refer to a dual clutch gear box equipped with paddle shift. That's what it is. When we talk about RSR and others yes, they all have paddle shift now BUT it's not a PDK but a SEQUENTIAL gear box equipped with paddle shifts replacing the stick. Life span: 30 hours! Not for street going cars!

BUT(!)

what if they offered a racing pedigree tranny as found in race cars like the Cup car

maybe a tweaked PDK version that acts and feels like a 6 speed sequential transmission?

A tweaked PDK to act like a manual would be stupid. There's no substitute for the real thing.

I've been told that it's officially only a PDK. I am very reluctant to believe those words, but it was a decent source.

Are we glad to own a 997 4.0?

i once had a black and white tv!!! thats all i knew ,if and when they bring the pdk to gt3 etc it will be right, we all know the difference from the race car set up to street car but the principals are there this new box would have been tested to suit the most hardcore track day guy!i still beleive once its out there everyone will rave about it and say why have we waited so long for it,they could have put it in 997,but when i spoke to andreas at goodwood launch of the 4.0 about general stuff ie design tweeks etc he made a stong point of saying the 4.0 wasn't a new model!!now with the 991 we may see a lot of the stuff we thought we were going to see in the 4.0,inc the new pdks system and possible design tweeks to make rs stand alone ,i hope anyway.always been a issue that you could be sitting in a 130k turbo s with the same interior as a bog standard carrera for half the value! lets get it bang on from choice of gearbox right up to the design imput

Before the 991 came out, a seemingly decent source came out claiming Hurley Haywood has driven the 991 in Germany, and it was an 8 cylinder with no rear seats. They claimed this was absolutely official no exceptions. Look where we are now, 6cyl boxer engine with two rear seats. Not doubting you or your source, just doubting rumors based on a single post.

And just saying, remember when the 7 speed manual was introduced, Porsche said as long as there is a demand for a manual transmission, they will offer a manual transmission.
