Here are some actual quotes from those on rennlist back in 2004. I think it's pretty interesting to see how loved the 997 now is.
The new interior is looking pretty awful. Let's hope these are just prototypes. [referencing a spy shot of the actual interior]
I've seen pics of the inside of a 997 and the steering wheel and general trimmings are close to the Cayenne's :-(
While I realize it's hard to draw conclusions based on these photos, my problems with this interior are

1. the steering wheel buttons - okay in an SUV, but seem too busy for a sportscar. I don't care for 'em in BMW sedans either.

2. the bulky center console - I have GT3 console delete in my Boxster and it really improved the interior legroom. I don't see how it's possible with this setup. That center console looks rather permanent. Who knows, maybe not.

3. The rectangular vents look VW, but that's a matter of taste.
Wouldn't 19's be a bit heavy though. I think I'd rather just have 18's.
The rear bumper stops too far from the ground, the rear spoiler is a little ugly and the indicators are just bizarre (are they really the finished design?)
The biggest problem I see is the front seems way too tame, but maybe it's still disguised. The rear is pretty good overall. It just might be a bit too bulgy, and egg shaped or something.
Interior too much like the Cayenne, just to save money ... door handles ... blah blah blah ...
Love the wheels. I dunno. Maybe its just my bias or I have grown to love the 996 shape so much, but if I don't like the front of the 997. It's lost its agressiveness. Especially if you compare against the Turbo front facelift of the 996. It's a bad excuse of trying to be a 993......or a VW Beetle.

I guess my take on it is this: if I want a 993 then I would go and buy the real thing. Besides it will probably be way more reliable than the new 997.
Porsches's evolve. I definitely do not like this edition, though. Very bland, no aggression, front end looks like a blank face staring into nothingness. The oval lights on the sloping hood/fender remind me of a Benz, and the whole front end looks definitely like a beetle. I'll wait for the 998, thank you.
not sure what system they're using, but i wasn't happy to see it. i doubt you can order the car without it either. maybe the GT2 and/or GT3 variants won't have it? i'd much prefer they just left the regular old steering in the car!
So, the ugly rims are real? Did they at least look better in person?
The "new" 997 lookes like a warmed over 996, unfortunately, not much to talk about. I hope this does not happen to Ferrari when it goes IPO next year. Sad really. The wheels are exceptionally bad as well, how about a focus group guys? At least the exceptionally poor ideas could be watered down some.
Don't get me wrong, there were a lot that loved it, but these are just examples of all the complaints.

Looks like a warmed over 996? Ummm, no. I have seen, driven and abused the 991. It's a huge step forward. Excellent. And there will be no RS imported into France. The US it will be a no charge option. To the OP...

Haha it's funny reading those comments. I bet most of those people talk about how much they love the 997 now.

I bet your right, Proof would be searching some of the user names. It just goes to show you how scared people are of change.

I always loved the porsche brand except for the 996 headlights. Id even take a cayanne. Cant wait to see what 991 brings for p car brand.

Spy photos are always ify

It is really unfortunate that this debate got completely derailed and that no real discussion was allowed.
This rumor may not be as crazy as it sounds. (Not saying it is true, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility as some here decry)

The GT3 RS is homologation car for the RSR- the very piece de resistance of the Porsche Motorsport GT program. (And from which Porsche makes a nice profit)

Some pundits are suggesting that the current and future GTE rules tend to benefit larger capacity engines, and in fact the RSR was the car with the smallest capacity engine of all its main rivals both within the 2011 ALMS and the old LMS series. In fact it seems that the BoP (Balance of Performance) seems to favor 8 cylinder larger capacity engine vehicles...
The BoP regulations applied by the VLN was said to be behind the decision for Manthey to pull his factory backed entry from the VLN and the next 24 H of the Nurburgring. They apparently felt that neither the RSR nor the R would be competitive enough against the R8’s, BMWs’ and Ferrari’s if the future BoP regulations are applied.

Now Porsche have a 2012 RSR that is improved, but it remains basically the same in the engine department. We will see how well it does against the competition during this season.

The rumored 8 cylinder 960/1 would serve as an ideal tool for a future homologation vehicle for the top of the range Porsche Morotsport GT program making a GT3 RS redundant for this particular purpose.

It is however important to note that the RS also serves as the base model for the CUP program (the very backbone of the GT Motorsport program – the real money maker) , but there is no reason why a “normal” 991 GT3 could not take over that role in the future.

A possible picture of the future Porsche Motorsport GT program could look like this.
• 960/1 = homologation model for future 960/1 RSR (competitor of the 458 Italia) in ACO sanctioned racing. (possibly VLN as well)
• 991 GT3= Basis for CUP and other GT racing series.

Again; I am not saying that this is the case, but it is a possible scenario.
