What are 996 GT2s going for these days

Keep in mind the suspension on these cars is totally different than any other 911 of the same era sold in N. America. You really need to know WTF you're doing to take advantage of the driving experience.
I wouldn't worry too much about getting an older vs. newer car. They're all the same, except for the '04s (very rare in US, I think less than 80 sold, and god know how many left with no stories), which got a slight bump in power, different wheels, fake carbon mirror covers and a real, bare carbon wing blade.
A lot of people consider these the last TRUE driver's turbocharged Porsche because there is no PSM, and it never came with a sunroof or backseats.
I know you owned a Turbo back in the day. It seems like a similar car, but isn't. Much more feedback and much crazier to keep under you.

I feel like the GT2 could become a real classic for the reasons you mentioned. I just don't think the 997 gt3/2 carry the same level of balls out take it to the edge fear of their 996 ancestors. I've been driving the 599 with CST-off and believe I know I just signed my death certificate lol, no seriously I am going to take this super slow. In the end though you need to get rid of the training wheels at some point and its very difficult to find a car without the matrix taking it over lol.

If no, sign up for some and take some.
Oh and autox too.
Get some DE so you can drive smoothly, and some autox so you can catch the rear at slow speed.
GT2 is quite enjoyable once you have some of these basic down.
