When reports like these trickle in..its usually the end of the existing model:
Mercedes S-Class: Production milestone in record time
While the PR work starts on the new S-Class, the automaker announced a production milestone for the current W221 S-Class, which also represents a small record.
The Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant manager Dr. Willi Reiss presented the keys of the 500,000th S-Class of the current W221 series to a long-standing S-Class owner. The anniversary car is a metallic brown S 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC in the long version, with PARKTRONIC and Night View Assist.
With 500,000 vehicles produced and sold during a period of seven years, the current series is the most successful S-Class ever. The previous model W220 was built between 1998 and 2005 about 485,000 times, and the W140 -- sometimes called "the tank" --, also in about seven years, only about 400,000 times. The wonderful W126 achieved the highest number, which in its long career from 1979 to 1991 achieved 820,000 units.
The Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen is Daimler's largest manufacturing plant. Last year, more than 22,000 employees manufactured over 480,000 cars in the C-, E- and S-Class and the CL series, CLS, SLS AMG and Maybach.
PS
Amazing success the W221.. Well deserved its been the leader from day 1 and still is.
I hope the W222 will be as good if not better
