So is this the official death of the BMW entry sports sedan, or do I wait for the "M4"?

I don't know about China, but here in India space is everything. The bigger the car is, the higher you're in society, unless you're driving a super car.

hotsauce is an unknown quantity at this point
First off the back seat in the 3 today is a joke. only little kids could have enough leg room to make use of those seats.

I really like the look of this car, too bad it's not avail in the US of A

Asians, especially in China, that can afford to buy a new 3 series BMW can also afford to have a chauffer. Hence the desirability of a LWB version of the 3 series in this market. Audi was first to offer an A6 LWB in China a few years back. Most high end european sedans in Asia are chauffer driven. This is a more affordable yet comfortable alternative to the bigger 5 or 7 series.

Un-necessary! A 5 series is there for a reason!

I'm still not quite seeing the advantage. A 328i in the US is only $12,000 cheaper than a 528i to begin with. I can imagine that price gap would only shrink with the long wheelbase version, especially because I would think anyone ordering the LWB car would most likely have quite a few options on it as well.
