The search engine is not bad, just register and start searching on these topics, and you'll be fine.

bimmernav has tons of good info too.

The first upgrade I did for my MIL was the DVD NAV. It is worth buying the BMW tool. Our ghetto hanger wire "tool" was a pain to use to get the original CD NAV out.

OK, thats cool.
ill have to look into all that. I know I have the old smaller nav system, and I haven't really played with it yet.
Sounds like the units on bimmernav are what every bmw owner wants from an aftermarket unit. nav, bt, satelite radio, etc... but with this unit you dont have to buy an aftermarket sony or alpine to get it all.

OK, so you have an early 01 then.

You'll need the screen and the DVD computer for proper NAV, and BM53 for the updated radio that will accept AUX.

Once you have the BM53, you can then also get the OEM SAT radio which can then be controlled from the steering wheel with the display showing on the NAV screen.

Ok, is there an upgraded NAV system also? Im wondering how they keep the navigation up to date... especially since the car is already 9 years old, almost 10.

Welcome to the BMW club. Some good advice here so far. If you plan on owning it for a while keep Mike Miller's old school maintenance guide as reference.

The MK4 computer (DVD based) came out in 2003, and there was a new firmware last year, I just installed it on my car and my MIL's. You can buy it from dealers for IIRC, 5 bucks.

And of course, 200 bucks for up to date DVD maps. Or you can buy my 2007 DVD for 55 bucks shipped.

Nope, just glad that I finally got the yard thing working instead of feet.

LOL...

Check the splash screens here....

and info on how to do it here...

Pretty easy to do. It is also pretty easy to add your own pic of anything you want. I just used the large M and love it. You can also change or remove the warning nag when you start the car.

It would be cool to have the "DONT TREAD ON ME" avatar pop up as a splash every time you start your car!
