New BMW owner looking for tips

bimmernav has tons of good info too.
The first upgrade I did for my MIL was the DVD NAV. It is worth buying the BMW tool. Our ghetto hanger wire "tool" was a pain to use to get the original CD NAV out.

ill have to look into all that. I know I have the old smaller nav system, and I haven't really played with it yet.
Sounds like the units on bimmernav are what every bmw owner wants from an aftermarket unit. nav, bt, satelite radio, etc... but with this unit you dont have to buy an aftermarket sony or alpine to get it all.

You'll need the screen and the DVD computer for proper NAV, and BM53 for the updated radio that will accept AUX.
Once you have the BM53, you can then also get the OEM SAT radio which can then be controlled from the steering wheel with the display showing on the NAV screen.

Welcome to the BMW club. Some good advice here so far. If you plan on owning it for a while keep Mike Miller's old school maintenance guide as reference.

And of course, 200 bucks for up to date DVD maps. Or you can buy my 2007 DVD for 55 bucks shipped.

and info on how to do it here...
v31 custom nav files - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)
Pretty easy to do. It is also pretty easy to add your own pic of anything you want. I just used the large M and love it. You can also change or remove the warning nag when you start the car.
It would be cool to have the "DONT TREAD ON ME" avatar pop up as a splash every time you start your car!
