Someone explain to me how this is different then the X6 (as stated).
I'm a HUGE Bimmer Fan, just not of..........well.......... the direction that they're going.

To be fair, the R Class drives nicely. Its just pretty damn ugly. In Black it resembles a hearse. Sales have plummeted since the car isn't being heavily built and then subsidized.

The target demographic for this model is baby boomers, and individuals with families. It wasn't designed to appeal to the younger enthusiast types. The 5 GT offers a comfortable/airy cabin, higher seating position, good visibility, easy entry/exit, and room for storage. I could see my father driving one of these on road trips with his sticks and luggage in the back. It offers the niche buyer who walks into the dealer a fresh alternative to SUVs and wagons.
Companies’ have/are/will target more and more products to our aging population. I'll use an example from the industry I work in. Currently, investment companies are marketing products and services to aging baby boomers. Why? There are a lot of them with accumulated wealth. This is a smart business decision by BMW. They're thinking outside the box and focusing on what people will need and want.

Now, if BMW could just drop the X6, and bring out a M3 CSL, and M version of the 1-series.

As much as the 'enthusiasts' might detest the GT (I'm no fan either although there isn't much wrong with the front), this car is going to sell.
Somehow this car strikes a chord with its intended market audience, the aforementioned 50+ yr. old baby boomer. Also don't forget that especially in Europe it has become 'socially unacceptable' to pull up in an SUV in many business settings, especially if you have to deal a lot with government or semi public clients.
