Do a google search for reliability, audi continuously ranks very low. Any audi with a 2.7t motor is just waiting to empty your wallet, a $7k car that WILL need a $3500+ turbo replacement. So that sub $20k S4 is waiting to break your heart as soon as the turbos both crap themselves, just hope they don't take anything else with them.
Then again, the experience I have had with Audis has been sort of limited because the Audis we have had have always been bought new and owned for fewer than five years so maybe that is when problems start to develop.
IMO, i wouldn't consider a car that had problems after five years of ownership unreliable because many people don't even keep their car for that long.
I've never heard anyone say that Audi's are unreliable to be completely honest. Everyone I've ever known who has had them, even a buddy who has a '99 S6 has never had any problems with it. Maybe the people you know have just had bad luck.

Audi does not have a good reputation of reliability with me either.
My friends B6 (V8) S4 needed a brand new engine at 30 something thousand miles ($18k), anyone I know with a B5 S4 (the one that does have the 2.7t) put so much money into them through repairs. I have personally owned two Audis. One was great (however I only owned it for the first year), and the other was getting warranty work done for about four weeks.
It's good that you have had good experiences, but I think, to the general public, Audi does not have a good reputation for reliability.

1999 A6 Sedan, 2004 A6 Sedan, 2007 A8L, 2010 Q7, and 2012 A7.
I imagine the sportier and interesting Audis would be the more problem-prone ones.

Excitement seems to usually come with a price, like sex.
"Ohh my god this is amazing - shit I have AIDS" Thanks, I'll be here all week.

I've had a B7 S4, B7 RS4, an A3 2.0T and an A3 TDI - none have had problems. Justin's S4 was definitely a lemon. Very unfortunate. VW is also considered a "bad quality" brand, but I've found that everyone with problems had Mexican-built VWs. All the German cars seem solid... (Two GTIs, Golf R, and a '72 Bug for me)
