Are transmissions getting TOO many gears?
#3
I think 6 is plenty for both, maybe even 5 for autos. Seems like 6-speed autos are just constantly shifting.
8 would drive me absolutely batty and would be a factor against buying a certain car.
My truck still has a 4-speed

I'm fine with however many ratios they can cram into an auto box. Let the people who don't give a shit about driving save the world with gas mileage and good emissions. It'd be pretty tough to fit that many gears into a manual box though.
Then again, when every car is all-electric in a few years, we won't even need transmissions!
Oh the horror!!!

If the electronics/software can manage it, I don't see why it wouldn't be. Cars are already crammed with a bunch of useless sh!t (you probably call them "features" ) you don't need, at least an extra gear can benefit the performance, fuel economy and drivability of the car. With dual clutch transmissions it's pretty seamless anyway.
Why is 5 better than 4? Why is 6 better than 5? Why is 7 better than 6?
